Geeks, Nerds and Superheroes

The Real Superhero
When I’m asked to be a keynote speaker, I usually tell one part or another of my story. We all have one to tell. Why not tell yours? But try to tell it without the drama. Just the facts. You will be impressed by the person behind that story.

I get a lot of questions about strength, focus, discipline, and more, from my audience. But the deeper questions come from within. How did I do it?!!

The answer is…
I have Superhero Powers.  But so do you!

This is an excerpt from the Geeks, Nerds and Superheroes Speaker Series. To book Keynote Speaker Kathleen Brandt, call 816-729-5995.

Autoimmune to I Am Immune!

Prospector: "a person who searches for natural occurrence of gold"

You Are A Superhero  -
We have all been faced with obstacles that seem insurmountable. So when I went from a six figure salary to Antiphospholipid Antibody Syndrome, I had nothing left in front of me but opportunities. Yes, I chose to call it an opportunity. Everything else seemed grim. Plus, I was still breathing. What’s a girl to do?

No longer could my International position allow me to jet-set across the waters to Europe.  I had no idea how the company would continue on its forward thrust without my executive input (actually the stocks plummeted shortly after, but my MIA was not the cause (nor was my past employment). What I was left with was days on end to think about “What’s Next?

Take Inventory of Your Life Skills and Passion
My Antiphospholipid Antibody Syndrome came with pulmonary hypertension, deep-vein thrombosis, and congestive heart failure with an enlarged right atrium.  Yep…lot’s of time on my hands to plan.  Time to put the BS (Before “Syndrome”) life behind me.

Let’s see:  flying was out, over-exertion and exercise was out,  including skiing and high altitudes. I guess my unrealistic chance to join the Winter Olympics team or gymnastic team were out too.

So I started to take notice of what WAS IN!

Are You A Scout For Your Business?

The Scout: a soldier or other person sent out ahead of a main force
so as to gather information about the enemy's position, strength, or movements.
3 Tips to Avoid Detours in Your Business
If you are a corporate exec, a marketing manager, or an entrepreneur, you should know the power of a strong "Scout" on your team. A true business scout goes out ahead of the others to gather information about the competition’s position, strength, and movements. But they are als
o gathering this data on the consumer. It’s about arming yourself with knowledge. But many scouts are derailed by detours.

Here are 3 tips to avoiding the detours:
Success from reviving an old path with small changes.
  1. Create a new path. Although we never want to “recreate the wheel,” and we definitely don’t want to discard what works, we do want to spin off the already “trodden path.” I know it sounds easier than it is, but gather data, and stay open to new ideas.
  2.  Take a different path. Sure you can do it the way everyone else has, and find ways to tweak it into a new niche, or you can start afresh. These are true innovators, those who have an ah ha! moment.  Our pioneer ancestors even figured this out (without the technology we have).  The migratory path to the westward lands were dangerous. It took courageous scouts – those who went out ahead – to plan safer, new routes.

A scout goes out ahead of others,
but ruts are created from those who follow the leader.

  3. Avoid ruts. Usually caused by “a fixed routine of thought or action,” you may be a victim “stuck in a rut.”  Have you lost their focus?  Remember a scout goes out ahead of others, but ruts are created from those who follow the leader.

Opportunities to Opening Doors

Do you know where this door is?
Do you have a preference how you enter or exit? Some like to pull open a door. Perhaps this is a great way to let the inside energy to seep into your presence. Others like to push open a door. A friend says, it's a grander statement: "I'm here." Some people like revolving doors. Like a child, I always find it surprising when I am deposited at my destination by a revolving door.  I still have the fear that I will miss my exit and go in circles.

This door analogy to our life can go on and on. Do you prefer glass doors where you can get a preview? Or, the solid door that comes with at least a hint of surprise behind it?

Portal: "an entrance, gateway, or doorway, especially one that is large and impressive and of imposing appearance"

Whatever your enter - exit preference is, know that we have to open, exit and maneuver portals of our life on a daily basis.
